Paul Tibbitt Moves to DreamWorks for New Original Animated Feature

 Grok Entertainment Desk | January 9, 2020

Paul Tibbitt, the director and co-writer behind the global blockbuster The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015), is quietly working on an all-new original animated feature film at DreamWorks Animation, multiple sources close to the project have confirmed to the Grok Entertainment Desk.

The untitled project marks Tibbitt’s return to feature directing following his work on the 2015 SpongeBob theatrical release and his long tenure as a key creative force on the SpongeBob SquarePants television series, where he served as supervising director and executive producer for many seasons.

According to insiders, the new film is described as a wholly original story—not based on any existing DreamWorks franchise or intellectual property—and is being positioned as a fresh addition to the studio’s theatrical slate. Development has been underway for some time, with Tibbitt actively shaping the screenplay and tone alongside a small creative team.

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, sources emphasize that the project carries the signature humor, visual inventiveness, and character-driven storytelling that Tibbitt brought to both SpongeBob projects and his earlier work on the Nickelodeon series.

DreamWorks Animation has not yet announced the film publicly, and no release window or voice cast has been attached at this stage. However, the studio has been actively expanding its original IP pipeline in recent years, and Tibbitt’s involvement is seen internally as a strong creative bet.
