Sony Pictures Animation Greenlights 'Bubble' Adaptation with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg

 Grok Entertainment Desk | May 1, 2020

Sony Pictures Animation has officially greenlit an adult-oriented animated feature film based on the popular 2018 sci-fi comedy podcast Bubble, with comedy powerhouses Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached to produce through their Point Grey Pictures banner.

The project teams the duo—known for their collaborations on hits like Superbad, Pineapple Express, This Is the End, and the R-rated animated feature Sausage Party—with producer Matt Tolmach (of Tolmach Productions, behind Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle). The film is being developed in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures.

Bubble, created by Jordan Morris and produced by Maximum Fun, is a 10-episode narrative podcast set in the utopian city of Fairhaven, a domed settlement on an alien planet where residents bond over battling monsters that threaten their enclosed world. The story blends sci-fi satire, humor, and adventure, following a group of friends involved in monster-killing exploits.

Sources indicate the adaptation aims to capture the podcast's witty, irreverent tone in an animated format targeted at mature audiences, following in the footsteps of Rogen and Goldberg's previous adult animation success. Jordan Morris is reportedly involved in scripting the feature.

This marks another step in Sony Pictures Animation's push into more diverse animated projects beyond family-friendly fare, building on their track record with titles across various tones.

No release date or voice cast details have been announced yet, as the project remains in early development. Stay tuned for updates on this intriguing crossover from podcast to big-screen animation.
