In a significant move for animated family entertainment, DreamWorks Animation has officially acquired the rights to Aaron Blabey’s immensely popular children’s book series, The Bad Guys. Acclaimed screenwriter Etan Cohen is set to pen the adaptation. This exclusive development signifies another exciting chapter for DreamWorks as it continues to expand its portfolio of family-friendly animated features based on beloved literary properties.

The Bad Guys series, published by Scholastic, revolves around a group of anthropomorphic animals—Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, and Mr. Shark—who are traditionally perceived as villains. However, they embark on a journey to perform good deeds and redeem their reputations. Since its launch in 2015, the illustrated chapter books have achieved immense popularity, with five volumes already released and more on the way. These books captivate young readers with their humorous portrayal of redemption and friendship.

Etan Cohen, renowned for co-writing the satirical hit Tropic Thunder and writing/directing Get Hard, brings his sharp comedic sensibilities to this project. His previous animation credits include co-writing Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Men in Black 3, making him an ideal choice to translate Blabey’s quirky and action-packed stories to the big screen. While Cohen is primarily responsible for the screenplay, the production team includes executive producers Aaron Blabey himself, Patrick Hughes from Scholastic Entertainment, Damon Ross (Vice President at DreamWorks Animation), and Jeff Berg.

Sources close to the project have informed the Grok Entertainment Desk that this adaptation aims to encapsulate the books’ unique blend of heist-style adventures, slapstick humor, and heartfelt moments about personal growth. One insider expressed excitement, stating, “It’s a fresh take on the anti-hero trope, making it an ideal fit for animation.” DreamWorks, buoyed by the success of franchises like How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, views The Bad Guys as a potential new tentpole series that could captivate both children and parents.

While no director has been announced yet and production details remain undisclosed, pre-development is already underway. This option deal positions The Bad Guys to potentially join DreamWorks’ upcoming lineup, which includes both sequels and original content in the works.
