In a significant development for family animation enthusiasts, DreamWorks Animation has officially greenlit a sequel to their popular film, The Boss Baby. The sequel is set for a theatrical release on March 26, 2021. Sources close to the production confirmed to the Grok Entertainment Desk that Alec Baldwin will reprise his role as the suit-wearing infant entrepreneur, and director Tom McGrath will return to helm the project.
The original The Boss Baby, inspired by Marla Frazee’s beloved picture books, made a splash in theaters earlier this year. It grossed over $400 million worldwide on a story about sibling rivalry with a corporate twist. The film follows a seven-year-old boy who discovers that his new baby brother is actually a secret agent on a mission to uncover a plot against puppies by the nefarious Puppy Co.
While the plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, insiders suggest that it will delve deeper into the family dynamics and high-stakes baby business world established in the first film. One studio executive revealed exclusively that the sequel will offer more laughs, more heart, and even bigger adventures. The creative team, including writer Michael McCullers, is expected to reunite, promising the same blend of sharp humor and heartfelt moments that made the original a surprise hit.
Universal Pictures, DreamWorks’ distribution partner, is fully committed to the franchise’s potential. A Universal spokesperson expressed excitement about bringing back this unique world for another round, stating that The Boss Baby has captured the imagination of audiences of all ages.
This announcement coincides with a wave of successful animated sequels, and DreamWorks is continuing to expand its portfolio with franchises like Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon. Production is expected to commence soon, with animation work beginning at DreamWorks’ Glendale campus.
