In a major shake-up for the animation world, Illumination – the powerhouse studio behind billion-dollar family hits like Despicable Me, Minions, and The Secret Life of Pets – has announced the creation of a new label called Moonlight, headed by industry veteran Mike Moon.
Moon, who recently departed Netflix after serving as Head of Adult Animation (where he oversaw edgy hits like Big Mouth, Inside Job, and the upcoming Entergalactic), is stepping in as President of Moonlight while also taking on the role of Senior Creative Advisor to Illumination overall.
The explicit goal? To expand Illumination's slate with animated features that "push beyond the family genre" – signaling a clear intent to explore more mature, adult-oriented storytelling. While no specific mention was made of R-rated content in the official announcement, sources close to the deal emphasize Moon's track record in adult animation, hinting at potential edgier projects that could include stronger language, themes, or humor not suited for kids.
Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri praised the move: "We have an exceptionally talented group of artists, filmmakers, and producers at Illumination and believe that there is no better complement to this team than Mike and the new company we are partnering to build. He has exceptional taste, deep experience, and a strong vision for the films we intend to make together."
Moon himself expressed excitement: "I am thrilled to be joining the amazing team at Illumination. Chris has created the benchmark for character, stories, and innovation in animated films, and I am honored to be a part of the future of this visionary studio."
Moonlight will operate out of Illumination's Santa Monica headquarters, with production handled through the studio's renowned pipeline at Illumination Studios Paris. All films from the label will fall under Illumination's exclusive distribution deal with Universal Pictures.
This comes at a pivotal time for animation. Moon's exit from Netflix in July coincided with the streamer's pullback on ambitious adult projects amid financial pressures. Now, joining forces with Illumination – fresh off the massive success of Minions: The Rise of Gru (over $900M worldwide) – positions Moonlight to potentially fill a gap in theatrical adult animation, a space long dominated by indie or streaming fare.
Industry insiders are buzzing: Could this lead to R-rated animated blockbusters from the Minions makers? With Moon's credits including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Gravity Falls, and The Midnight Gospel, expectations are high for innovative, boundary-pushing films.
As of now, no specific projects have been announced for Moonlight, but the label is poised to augment Illumination's family-dominant lineup with bolder, grown-up stories.
