Pixar Unveils Two Exciting New Feature Films: Domee Shi's 'Turning Red' and Toy Story Spin-Off 'Lightyear' Both Slated for 2022 Theatrical Releases

Grok Entertainment Desk | December 10, 2020

Emeryville, CA – In a major announcement during The Walt Disney Company's 2020 Investor Day presentation, Pixar Animation Studios revealed details on its upcoming slate, thrilling fans with two brand-new feature films set to hit theaters in 2022. Academy Award-winning director Domee Shi will make her feature directorial debut with Turning Red, while the iconic Buzz Lightyear gets his origin story in the sci-fi adventure Lightyear.

Turning Red, directed by Domee Shi (the visionary behind the Oscar-winning short Bao), introduces audiences to Mei Lee, a confident yet dorky 13-year-old navigating the chaos of adolescence. With a fantastical twist, Mei transforms into a massive red panda whenever she gets overly excited – a metaphor for the uncontrollable changes of growing up. Produced by Lindsey Collins, the film promises Pixar's signature blend of heart, humor, and cultural depth, drawing from Shi's own experiences. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 11, 2022.

In another blockbuster reveal, Pixar is finally bringing to life the "in-universe" movie that inspired the beloved Buzz Lightyear toy from the Toy Story franchise. Titled Lightyear, this sci-fi action-adventure tells the definitive origin story of the human Space Ranger – the heroic test pilot who became a legend. Voiced by Chris Evans (Captain America), the film is directed by Angus MacLane (co-director of Finding Dory). Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter emphasized that this is not a story about the toy, but the epic blockbuster that Andy would've watched in the '90s, sparking his obsession with the action figure. Lightyear blasts into theaters on June 17, 2022.

These announcements underscore Pixar's commitment to bold, original storytelling alongside innovative takes on beloved characters. Both films are planned for exclusive theatrical runs, following the studio's tradition of big-screen experiences. Fans can look forward to more details, trailers, and casting news in the coming months.

DreamWorks Animation Greenlights 'Dog Man' Animated Feature with Peter Hastings Set to Direct

 Grok Entertainment Desk | December 9, 2020

In a major development for fans of Dav Pilkey's bestselling children's graphic novel series, DreamWorks Animation has officially optioned the rights to Dog Man and greenlit the development of an animated feature film adaptation. The studio announced today that Peter Hastings, the acclaimed writer and producer known for his work on The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and various Kung Fu Panda series, has been attached to direct the project.

Dog Man, a spin-off from Pilkey's wildly popular Captain Underpants universe, follows the adventures of a heroic hybrid crime-fighter created when a police officer and his loyal dog are critically injured and surgically fused together in a life-saving procedure. The series, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and become a #1 global bestseller, is beloved for its hilarious, heartfelt stories, flip-o-rama pages, and themes of friendship, creativity, and redemption.

"As his readers all over the world know, Dav Pilkey is truly one of the most creative and talented storytellers of his generation," said Kristin Lowe, Chief Creative Officer of Features at DreamWorks Animation. "And Peter Hastings is just the right person to bring this iconic character to the big screen and the legions of fans who are all eagerly awaiting the adaptation."

Pilkey himself expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: "I am humbled and grateful to once again work with the brilliant Peter Hastings and the outstanding team at DreamWorks Animation."

Hastings' prior experience adapting Pilkey's work on the Netflix series The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants made him a natural fit to helm the film, ensuring the movie captures the books' signature blend of slapstick humor, emotional depth, and childlike wonder.

No release date or additional casting details have been announced yet, but development is underway. This marks another exciting expansion of Pilkey's universe on screen, following the 2017 hit Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.

Nickelodeon Movies has enlisted the talents of ‘Shrek Forever After’ director Mike Mitchell and ‘The Emoji Movie’ helmer Tony Leondis for the upcoming ‘Peppa Pig: The Movie’. The movie is slated for a theatrical release in 2027
