DreamWorks Animation Greenlights Development on 'Ronan Boyle and the Bridge of Riddles' Adaptation

  Grok Entertainment Desk | September 15, 2020

In an exciting move for fans of whimsical fantasy adventures, DreamWorks Animation has officially launched development on an animated feature film adaptation of Thomas Lennon's bestselling young adult novel Ronan Boyle and the Bridge of Riddles.

The project, which reinvents classic Irish mythological elements through the eyes of an awkward teenage protagonist, follows Ronan Boyle—a 15-year-old recruit in a secret police force tasked with policing mischievous magical creatures like leprechauns and other folklore beings. When his parents are wrongly accused of stealing a national treasure and imprisoned, Ronan embarks on a high-stakes quest to clear their names, facing riddles, monsters, and the chaotic world of faerie law enforcement.

Irish director Fergal Reilly (The Angry Birds Movie) has been signed to helm the film. Thomas Lennon, the book's author (known for his work on Reno 911! and other comedy projects), will adapt his own novel into the screenplay. The story promises a blend of humor, action, and heartfelt coming-of-age moments set against a backdrop of rule-breaking leprechauns and deadly magical threats.

This marks another addition to DreamWorks Animation's growing slate of original and adapted animated features, drawing from the book's New York Times bestseller status and its fresh take on Irish folklore tropes.

No release date or voice cast details have been announced yet, as the project is in early development stages.

Nickelodeon Movies has enlisted the talents of ‘Shrek Forever After’ director Mike Mitchell and ‘The Emoji Movie’ helmer Tony Leondis for the upcoming ‘Peppa Pig: The Movie’. The movie is slated for a theatrical release in 2027
