In a surprising announcement that has left many early internet video creators and nostalgia enthusiasts reeling, One True Media—the once-popular online video editing platform—has confirmed it will shut down permanently at the end of next month.
The service, which launched in 2005 under SpotMixer and allowed users to easily combine photos, videos, music, and effects into polished montages and slideshows, posted a brief notice on its site stating: "On May 31, 2014, One True Media will cease operations, and access to www.onetruemedia.com will be terminated." Users were directed to the FAQs for guidance on exporting and saving their projects before the deadline, with options including downloading files, posting to YouTube, or purchasing physical DVDs.
The closure follows Disney Interactive's acquisition of SpotMixer (One True Media's parent company) in 2012, a move described at the time as aimed at bolstering Disney's own photo and video storytelling tools, such as the Story app. Despite the platform's peak popularity—boasting over seven million users and around 15,000 daily creations—it appears the service did not align with Disney's long-term priorities, leading to this wind-down roughly a year and a half after the buyout.
One True Media carved out a unique niche in the mid-2000s web era, powering countless amateur edits, fan tributes, family videos, and early YouTube uploads with its user-friendly interface, real-time previews, and library of effects—features that felt revolutionary before widespread access to advanced desktop software or mobile apps. Many users expressed disappointment online, with forums and comments highlighting frustration over the lack of direct alternatives at a similar low price point (subscriptions had been around $3.99/month).
As the May 31 deadline approaches, creators are rushing to preserve their work. The site will go dark shortly thereafter, marking the end of an accessible chapter in online video creativity. One True Media may be gone, but its influence lingers in the countless montages still floating around the web from that simpler time of internet video.
