Jim Carrey & Amy Adams Lending Voices to 'Popeye' Movie

Amy Adams / Popeye / Jim Carrey
Grok Entertainment Desk | August 18, 2011

Back in March of 2010, we learned that Sony Pictures Animation, who delivered a spectacular adaptation of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, would be developing  a 3D completely computer animated film version of the classic cartoon sailor Popeye. At the time, Mike Jones  (of only The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break screenplay) landed the job of writing the script, but no director had been chosen yet. We're not sure if Jones is still involved but It's on the grid  is saying that Jim Carrey will voice the spinach-eating strong man while Amy Adams will lend her voice to his supremely skinny girlfriend Olive Oyl.

There's no doubting Carrey's voice backing Popeye since the man seems to have an endless arsenal of funny voices and impersonations. As for Adams, I'm recalling her sweet little voice that she put on for Enchanted, and think she can pull of Olive Oyl quite spectacularly. Of course, I'm still not sure that Popeye can properly be brought to the big screen. Once again, what makes those cartoons classic are the vocal talents from decades past and the nostalgic love for animation. But maybe I'm just being stingy since enough people turned out for The Smurfs to Allow for a Sequel. After all, it can't be any worse than the live-action adaptation with Robin Williams. As of now take these casting updates as rumor, and we'll try to keep you posted as more information becomes available.

‘Madagascar’ Spin-Off to Be Helmed by ‘Bee Movie’ Co-Director

 Grok Entertainment Desk | August 11, 2011

The DreamWorks project will highlight the wily penguins from the animated comedy.

Simon Smith, who co-directed DreamWorks Animations’ Bee Movie, had been tapped to direct the animation house’s untitled Madagascar spin-off starring the penguins.

Also coming on board is Lara Breay (Megamind), who will produce.

DWA put the movie project into fast-track development in March, hiring Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, the writers behind DWA's Will Ferrell-voiced Megamind, to pen the script  focusing on  the paramilitary parables of plucky penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico.

The quartet are the secondary but scene-stealing characters of the Madagascar movies.

The project is still a ways a way from casting anyone.

Smith is a DWA animator who has slowly but surely risen through the ranks. He was head of layout for the company’s Antz and Shrek, and a layout consultant on Shrek 2 before directing the Shrek 4-D animated attraction which is part of the Universal Studios theme park. He also directed two video shorts that were DVD extras on DWA releases: the Shrek-themed short Far Far Away Idol and Megamind: The Button of Doom.

The Jerry Seinfeld-centric Bee Movie, released in 2007, was co-directed with Steve Hickner.

Nickelodeon Movies has enlisted the talents of ‘Shrek Forever After’ director Mike Mitchell and ‘The Emoji Movie’ helmer Tony Leondis for the upcoming ‘Peppa Pig: The Movie’. The movie is slated for a theatrical release in 2027
